Root Canal Treatment in Marshfield, MA

The words “root canal” can often spark fear, but this is no longer the case for Azure Dental patients. Root canal treatment has improved significantly over the years and is now a standard, pain-free dental procedure. Azure Dental offers root canal treatment in Marshfield, MA, to help restore an infected tooth.

When is a Root Canal Needed?

A root canal may be the best option for those experiencing signs of inflammation or infection, such as tooth sensitivity to different temperatures, consistent pain or swelling, or dark discoloration of a tooth. These signs point to a larger issue that, if left untreated, could result in severe pain and the need for removal. Our Marshfield dentists can help you assess what the underlying issue might be and see if a root canal may be the solution to save an infected or inflamed tooth.

What Happens During a Root Canal?

The root canal process consists of removing the infected pulp from inside the chamber of the tooth and replacing it with a rubber-like substance. It is typically performed in one visit, but there are occasions where a second visit may be necessary. There are several steps in the procedure as follows:

Step 1: Anesthesia

An anesthetic is first applied to help the patient feel comfortable and relaxed. Patients can stay awake for the duration of the process as their mouth will feel numb around the area of the infected tooth.

Step 2: Create an Opening

Once the anesthetic has numbed the area, an opening is made into the infected tooth using a small drill. This allows access into the chamber and inner canals.

Step 3: Remove the Infected Pulp

Our dentist then uses specialized tools to extract the inflamed pulp inside the tooth’s chamber and canal areas. This step is key to stopping the spread of infection.

Step 4: Clean the Area

The canal is then thoroughly cleaned and disinfected ensuring all debris is removed and the site is bacteria-free.

Step 5: Fill the Canal

A rubber-like material called gutta-percha is used to fill the area. This biocompatible material is packed into the canal to create a seal so that it will remain free of bacteria and further infection.

Step 6: Close the Opening

The area that was first opened is now closed with a filling. Some patients may need a crown restoration as well.

Step 7: Crown the Tooth

Our dentist will assess the tooth and determine if a crown is needed or any follow up procedures. Front teeth typically do not need a crown as there is enough structure and protection as compared with molars.

How Long is the Recovery Process?

Patients may feel some sensitivity or discomfort following the procedure, especially if there was severe pain to start. It is recommended that you chew on the other side of the mouth at first and pain medications can be prescribed. Most patients only experience mild discomfort and can return to their regular activities within the same day. Here at Azure Dental we recommend a follow-up appointment to ensure the site has remained clean.
